A village visit is a chance to understand a place at a slower pace. It is also a visit to somewhere people live and work. Approaching the day with curiosity and consideration makes it more comfortable for the people you meet and more rewarding for you.
Follow local guidance about access
Do not assume that a path, house, courtyard, or field is open to visitors because it looks welcoming or appears in a photograph online. Follow signs and ask when you are unsure. Your guide or host can explain which spaces are shared and which are private.
Stay on established routes through farmland. Avoid stepping into planted fields or moving belongings to improve a photograph. Let farming work, deliveries, and people going about their day pass without obstruction.
Ask before taking photographs
Make contact first and accept a refusal without pressure. Permission to photograph a landscape is not permission to photograph the people in it. Be particularly thoughtful around children, inside homes, and during personal or community activities.
Keep the conversation human
A smile and a simple greeting are often a better beginning than a camera. If you do not share a language, ask your guide to help you communicate rather than guessing what someone is comfortable with.

Support local work thoughtfully
If you want to buy something, take time to ask about it and agree a price before purchasing. You are not obliged to buy, but you can decline politely. Choose purchases because you value the item or service, and avoid making promises you do not intend to keep.
Vietnam Tourism’s responsible-travel guidance encourages visitors to support locally run experiences. Asking who provides a meal, a stay, or a craft demonstration helps you understand how your visit connects with the community.
Be a considerate guest
Ask about household customs before entering a home.
Dress with the setting and your host’s guidance in mind.
Keep noise low near homes and shared spaces.
Carry your litter out and reduce unnecessary packaging.
Avoid handing out sweets or money to children.
Ask before offering gifts or joining an activity.
Leave space for an ordinary day
Not every meeting needs to become a performance or a photograph. Give people room to continue their work, and be ready for plans to change around local priorities. A guide can add context without turning every encounter into a scheduled attraction.
